James William Emmerson was born in Sunderland, co. Durham, and attested for the Royal Army Medical Corps at Ferryhill. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 10 May 1915, and was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving with the 27th Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C. He died on 28 July 1918; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
