Ludwig Mond, 1st Baron Melchett (1839-1909), chemist and founder of the Mond Nickel Co of Canada, studied at Marburg and Heidelberg under Robert Bunsen. He came to England in 1862 and became a naturalised Briton in 1867; together with Sir John Tomlinson Brunner he founded the chemical giant Brunner Mond & Co in 1872, which employed approximately 4,000 workers at the time of his death.
