George Barrett was born in Kent on 19 May 1882 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 25 April 1898. Advanced Petty Officer on 1 February 1915, he served during the Great War in H.M.S. Impregnable from 3 April 1915 to 24 March 1916, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 9 June 1915. He saw further service in H.M.S. Conquest from 1 April 1916, and was present in her when she was shelled by German battle cruisers during the naval bombardment of Yarmouth and Lowestoft on 25 April 1916. He was shore pensioned on 18 My 1922, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day
