John George Hodding was born in 1869, the son of Major-General G. C. Hodding, C.B., and attested for the Oxfordshire Light Infantry in January 1889, serving with the 1st Battalion in South Africa. He took promotion as Captain in May 1902 on transfer to the 36th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. In July 1903 he went to the West African Regiment as a company commander remaining employed as such until May 1914. Recalled for war service he served in the 6th Reserve Regiment of Cavalry, 7th Battalion King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, 15th Battalion Hampshire Regiment (as second in command) and the 53rd (Young Soldiers) Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He ultimately served with the Chinese Labour Corps for three months in 1919, and died in Highgate on 8 June 1931.
