Robert Charles Pitman was born in Wandsworth, London, in 1869 and attested for the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Transferring to the 1st Home Counties Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force) on 8 April 1908, he was awarded his Territorial Force Efficiency Medal on 1 December 1908.
