France, Claude Joseph Rouget de l'Isle, 1833, a bronze medal by E. Rogat, bust right, rev. all six verses of La Marseillaise, 51mm (Niggl 1727; Molinari 309; BDM V, 192; cf. BDW 13, 623). Extremely fine (£30-40)

La Marseillaise was written by Rouget de l'Isle while serving as an officer in the Army of the Rhine. Although the song will be forever associated with the Revolution and Republican ideals, ironically Rouget de l'Isle was a Royalist and narrowly escaped the guillotine
