John Hubert Ingatius Monteith was commissioned temporary 2nd Lieutenant on 24 November 1914, and promoted to temporary Lieutenant on 24 April 1915; temporary Captain, 11th Battalion, 17 July 1915; temporary Major, 3 November 1916; proceeded to France with 11th Battalion on 3/4th December 1915; wounded 7 July 1916 in attack on Mametz Wood; rejoined battalion in November 1916; joined 10th Battalion in May 1918 and appears to have been in temporary command until relieved on 5 July 1918; part of 10th Battalion under his command persisted in attack on Villers-Outreaux at 1 a.m. on 8 October 1918, in which C.S.M. J. H. Williams earned the V.C. to add to his D.C.M., M.M. & Bar.
