Pair: Senior Nursing Sister W. Woof, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service, together with an extensive photograph album of the recipient’s post-War service in Malta

Defence and War Medals 1939-45, mounted for wear; together with an Oldham Royal Infirmary Nursing Badge, gilt and enamel, the reverse engraved ‘W. Woof’, the last with enamel damage and solder repair to pin fitting, otherwise very fine (3) £100-£140

Winifred Woof was born in Burnley, Lancashire in 1913, and trained as a nurse at Oldham Royal Infirmary 1937-40, being registered by the British Nursing Council on 27 June 1941. In the February 1944 Navy List she is recorded as a Reserve Nursing Sister, serving at the Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital, Woolton, with seniority 5 March 1943. She joined Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service on a Short Service Commission on 14 July 1950, and served at the Royal Naval Hospital, Malta, and the Royal Naval Air Station, Hal Far, Malta, being promoted Senior Nursing Sister on 1 March 1951. She withdrew from Naval service on completion of her Short Service Commission on 21 November 1953.

Sold together with an extensive photograph album of the recipient’s time in Malta, which includes several photographs of the then Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Philip, and numerous Royal Naval Nursing staff group photos, ships and aircraft, in all over 160 photographs and postcards; together with a portrait photograph of Sister Woof and a named invitation.
