Alfred Windmill Smith was born in Twickenham, Middlesex, on 20 June 1892 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 11 June 1908. Advanced Able Seaman on 10 November 1911, he served for the majority of the Great War in the Destroyer Depot Ship H.M.S. Diligence, and was invalided out of the service on 1 September 1919.
