Edgar Smith was born in Rock Ferry, Cheshire in January 1879. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in October 1896, and advanced to Able Seaman in January 1899. Smith served with H.M.S. Canopus (battleship), August 1914 - May 1916, during which time she was engaged in the Dardanelles Campaign. He was ‘Invalided’ out of service in July 1916.
