David Mortley Smith was born in New Romney, Kent in July 1871. He joined the Royal Navy as a Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in November 1894, and advanced to Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class in March 1909 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in December 1909). Smith served H.M.S. Lancaster (cruiser), September 1913 - June 1915, and subsequently with the destroyer H.M.S. Ure.
