Stanley Arthur Adams was born on 2 April 1921, near Norwich. He enlisted into the Hampshire Regiment at Brighton for 7 years with the Colours and 5 years in Reserve. He joined the 1st Battalion on 28 April 1940, and served in Egypt, Malta, Middle East, North Africa, Italy, and North West Europe. He was wounded in action on 31 July 1943, but date amended to 3 August 1943, and also on 7 June 1944, in N.W. Europe. Transferred to 5th Wiltshire Regiment in December 1944 and by May 1946 he was in the 4th Battalion. Transferred to the 2nd Glosters in July 1946, in B.A.O.R., and to the Reserve Section B in January 1947.

Private Adams was recalled from the Reserve for service with the 1st Glosters in Korea on 8 August 1950, and served in Korea from 11 October 1950. He was posted missing at the battle of Imjin River on 26 April 1951, and confirmed as PoW the following day, having been slightly wounded in the right hand, right side chest and ribs. He was held in No. 1 Camp at Chongsong from June 1951 to 9 August 1953. After a short period of recuperation in Japan, he returned to the U.K. where he was discharged to ‘Z’ Reserve on 29 December 1953.
