Harry George Dinham was born in Devonport, Devon in July 1872. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in December 1887, and advanced to Able Seaman in November 1891. Dinham transferred to H.M. Coastguard in 1899, and served at Worthing, Aldwick, Thorney and Cuckmere stations (awarded L.S. & G.C. in 1906).

Dinham transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve in October 1913, and served as a Petty Officer 2nd Class with H.M.S.
Canopus, August 1914 - June 1915. During the latter period she served in the Battle of the Falklands (8 December 1914), and the Dardanelles Campaign. Dinham subsequently served with H.M. Ships Europa and St. George, and was demobilised as Petty Officer 1st Class in February 1919.
