Stephen Linden Harnett was born at Southampton on 3 June 1889 and entered naval service as a Boy Artificer on 26 July 1905, in H.M.S. Victory II. He served in several ships including H.M.S. Hermes, H.M.S. Canada, H.M.S. Illustrious, H.M.S. Dolphin and H.M.S. Renown. He was paid a war gratuity for service in H.M.S. Canada and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in July 1922. He was shore pensioned on 2 June 1929, but was recalled for service on 25 August 1939, as a Chief Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class (Pensioned), to serve in H.M.S. Vernon and H.M.S. Boscawen, until released from service in August 1945.
