Thomas George Burtonshaw was born at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex on 23 November 1881 and commenced his naval service on 14 February 1900. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in September 1915, whilst serving in H.M.S. Attentive (Dovor Patrol), and his medals for service in the Great War were sent to H.M.S. Truant.
