Andrew McDonald was born in Liverpool on 22 June 1882, and entered naval service on 21 October 1901, enlisting for 12 years, by trade a cook. He was serving in the Acasta class Destroyer H.M.S. Contest when, on 18 September 1917, she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-106 in the Western Approaches of the Channel. His service record is annotated: ‘To express appreciation of the behaviour under very trying circumstances, on the occasion of the loss of H.M.S. Contest.’ His Great War Medals were sent to H.M.S. Emperor of India. He was appointed to H.M.S Greenwich in August 1918.
