Charles Norman MacLean Hamilton was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 24 March 1916. Twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 18 May 1917 and 23 December 1918), he was appointed Adjutant, and held the temporary rank of Captain.
