The National Fire Brigades Union was formed in 1889. By 1914 the membership had grown to over 1,000 individual fire brigades, the majority of which were volunteer brigades. The N.F.B.U. changed its name to the National Fire Brigades Association (N.F.B.A.) in 1918.
