George Jacobs was born in Alverstoke, Hampshire, on 2 December 1852 and enlisted into the Royal Navy in March 1868 as a Boy 2nd Class, first serving in H.M.S. Duke of Wellington. He later transferred to H.M.S. Glasgow and then to H.M.S. Excellent, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal whilst serving with the latter vessel.
