H. R. Stevens served during the Second World War as a Captain in the Movement Control Section, Royal Engineers, before transferring to the Army Emergency Reserve of Officers on 16 February 1955. He transferred to the Army Catering Corps, A.E.R.O. on 10 February 1965, and was awarded his Army Emergency Reserve Decoration later that year (London Gazette 14 May 1965).
