Provenance: Acquired by the vendor directly from the recipient’s family.

James Ramsey Stewart was born in Coldstream, Berwick, and attested for the Middlesex Regiment at Hounslow, Middlesex. He served with the 11th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action when he was shot through the heart on the evening of 23 April 1917. A letter written to the recipient’s wife by the Regimental Chaplain states:
‘He was killed in action and died nobly doing his duty. His loss will be felt by all in the Battalion.’

Stewart is buried in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe, France.

Sold with named Record Office enclosure for the British War Medal; Record Office notification and Certificate of death; various letters written to the recipient’s wife informing her of his death; and copied research, including a photographic image of the recipient.
