Alick Humphrey was born in London on 2 July 1872 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 25 August 1896. Advanced Chief Stoker on 3 March 1909, he served during the Great War in H.M.S. Hampshire from the outbreak of War, and was killed in action when the Hampshire, conveying Field Marshal Lord Kitchener on a diplomatic mission to Russia, struck a German-mine off Orkney on 5 June 1916 and sank within 15 minutes with the loss of 737 lives. There were only 12 survivors. Humphrey is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
