William Beattie served with the 8th Hussars during the Great War on the Western Front from 11 November 1914.
The regiment was stationed at Amabla in India at the outbreak of hostilities and arrived at Marseille in November 1914 as part of the 3rd (Ambala) Cavalry Brigade.
Beattie transferred to the 2nd Munster Rifles on 7 April 1916 and then later transferred to the Royal Irish Rifles with which unit he served in the rank of Lance-Corporal.
