John Smith served with the 2nd Life Guards during the Great War on the Western Front from 8 October 1914. He subsequently transferred to the Labour Corps and then to the Guards Machine Gun Regiment. The recipient’s medal index card states that his British War and Victory medals were returned under King’s Regulations 1923 Para 992 but were reissued in April 1939.
