Thomas Maley was born in Ardwick, Manchester, in 1873 and attested for the 4th (Militia) Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment at Manchester on 29 December 1892. He was embodied for Military Service on 13 December 1899, and served with the Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 9 January 1900.
