William Joseph Buike was born in St Leonard’s, Sussex, on 21 March 1883, entering naval service as a Boy 2nd Class in H.M.S. St Vincent on 7 November 1898. He served as such in H.M.S. Goliath from 17 April to 4 September 1900 and was discharged to shore on 25 March 1913, with the rank of Able Seaman.
