YORKSHIRE, Doncaster, oval ivory (2), Ladies Stand, Erected 1858, backs named (No. 33, J. Smyth, Esq, MP; No. 34, J. Smyth, Esq, MP), both 50 x 37mm, 8.31g and 8.15g (W –; D & W –; cf. DNW 176, 284) [2]. About very fine and better, but second with some minor scratches on reverse, very rare; pierced for suspension, with contemporary blue ribbons

John George Smyth, JP, DL, MP (1815-69), Heath Hall, Wakefield, and 17 Lowndes square, London; eldest son of John Henry Smyth (1780-1822) of Heath Hall; educ. Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge; married the Hon. Diana Bosville Macdonald (1812-80), daughter of Godfrey Macdonald, 3rd Baron Macdonald of Sleat, on 25 April 1837, by whom he had four daughters; Colonel of 2nd West York Militia; Conservative MP for York 1847-65; great-uncle of Sir John Smyth, 1st Bt, VC (1893-1983).
