Pius IX, c.1850, a uniface bronzed electrotype portrait by T. Saulini, bust left, 68mm. Extremely fine and seemingly unpublished (£60-80)

Saulini was a celebrated gem engraver who generally worked in the medium of hardstone. No completed medals by him are believed known, but Forrer (BDM V, 341) records a similar uniface electrotype of George Townsend, canon of Durham, dated 1850 and signed in a similar manner. These two uniface portraits may represent work in progress for medals which did not come to fruition
