Great Exhibition, 1851, Services medal, in bronze, by W. Wyon, similar, edge named (Colonel Justin Shiel), 48mm (Allen 50; BHM 2465; E 1461; cf. DNW 45, 620-6). Minor rim nicks, good very fine (£40-60)

General Sir Justin Sheil, KCB (1803-71); b. Waterford; educ. Stonyhurst; nominated to an East India cadetship and posted as Ensign to the 3rd Bengal Infantry, 4 March 1820; adjutant with 35th Bengal Infantry; present at the siege of Bhurtpore, 1826 (A of I medal with clasp); Capt. 13 April 1830; appointed second in command of the troops in Persia under Major Pasmore, July 1833; secretary to the British Legation in Persia, February 1836; Major 17 February 1841; envoy and minister at the Shah of Persia’s court, 1844-54; Major-General 1859.
