The Prince Albert’s (Somersetshire Light Infantry), a good quality officer’s green cloth 1878 pattern Home Service helmet by Hawkes & Co., the KC plate with silver title scroll and centre, complete with spike and chin chain, lining, sweat band etc, the plate is original to the helmet, label behind the sweat band with period inscription ‘Wardlaw 2 Som LI’, excellent gilt to the spike and chin-chain, no gilt remains on the plate, quadrant, peak trim and spine,one small ‘softened’ section on the rear peak £400-500

Penrose Mark-Wardlaw (aka PM Wardlaw) commissioned 2nd Lieut 2.6.1894, 2nd Som LI, Lieut 1.1.98, Captain 23.5.1903 Major 11.11.14, Lt-Col retired 1919. South African War 1899-1902 took part in the Relief of Ladysmith including the actions at Spion Kop, Tugela Heights and the Relief of Wepener; advance from Vryberg to Johannesburg under Genereal Hunter; operations against De Wet in Orange River Colony; relief of Col. Hoare at Eland’s River; operations under General Hart in the Gatsrand, Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp districts; under General Barton in the Klerksdorp district; in the Eastern Transvaal July 1901 to February 1902 (MID and medal with 5 clasps)
