Fairground Carousel Centaur depicting Lord Roberts of Khandahar, in carved wood and plaster, profusely decorated in lavish colours, the ‘Roberts section’ depicts him in scarlet tunic and cocked hat, wearing a breast star and white shoulder belt, some cracks and damage to paintwork, otherwise in good condition for age and a rare survival £300-500

Original carousels of this type were carved in England by one C.J. Spooner commencing in the 1890’s. Boer War generals were among his favourite subjects, and included Buller Baden-Powell White and French. Another carver John Anderson is also credited with producing these magnificent two-seater carousels.
