Curwen Margam Lewis was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Lewis of The Louvre, Porthcawl, Glamorganshire. Lewis served at Khartoum in 1898 and in the Boer War. During the Great War he served with the South African Infantry in German South West Africa and in Egypt. He died, 16 July 1916, aged 37 years, whilst serving with the 3rd South African Infantry. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
