Four: Private E. A. Allen, Royal Army Medical Corps

Ernest A. Allen was mobilised from the Territorials (R.A.M.C.) in August 1914 and arrived in France in March 1915, where ‘he took an active part in many engagements, including the Battles of Givenchy, Ypres, the Somme, Lens, Arras, Vimy Ridge and Albert’ (National Roll of the Great War refers). In December 1917 he was drafted to the Italian front but returned to France in April 1918 as a Stretcher Bearer in the 4th London Field Ambulance, 47th London Division, and, according to the aforementioned source, ‘fought at Lille and other places, and was wounded in action. He was demobilised in January 1919.’

Allen was awarded his T.F.E.M. in A.O. 67 of 1919 and a Bar in May 1935.

Sold with an original and attractive card certificate of service for the 4th London Field Ambulance, which confirms his attachment to the unit from 15 April 1918 to 14 January 1919; together with a wartime postcard to his wife, dated 23 September 1917, depicting damage to the Halles of Ypres and Saint Martin’s cathedral.
