Henry Edward Earl, who was born in January 1882, served in ‘D’ and ‘E’ Squadrons of the Southern Rhodesia Volunteers during the Boer War. Enlisting in the Hertfordshire Yeomanry on the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, he arrived in the Egyptian theatre of war in early November of the same year, and may have served with the Regiment in Gallipoli from August of 1915. Towards the end of the latter year, however, Earl was commissioned into the 6th Battalion, Rifle Brigade, and, in October 1916, appears to have transferred to the Royal Flying Corps as an instructor in wireless signalling at Brooklands. He subsequently served in a similar capacity in France and Canada and was advanced to Temporary Captain in July 1917; sold with assorted medal roll entries, some of which refer to duplicate issues, etc.
