Herbert George Cable was born in Maidstone, Kent and enlisted at Eastbourne. Serving with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade, he entered the France / Flanders theatre of war on 23 August 1914. He was killed in action on 26 August 1914. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial. ‘Soldiers Died’ and ‘Commonwealth War Graves Commission’ give his number as ‘286’.
