William Beattie was born in and enlisted at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. He served with the one company of the 8th (Lanark) Battalion which served in France from 1 November 1914, attached to the 8th Battalion Royal Scots. As Private 335759 in the 8th Battalion Royal Scots, he was killed in action on 18 April 1917, aged 22 years. He was buried in the Faubourg d’Amiens Cemetery in Arras.
