William Clapham was born in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire and enlisted at Northampton. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, he entered the France / Flanders theatre of war on 14 August 1914 and was later awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 14 September 1916). He was killed in action on 1 October 1918 and buried at Flesquieres Hill British Cemetery.
