Daniel Rigby was born in Oswestry and enlisted at Shrewsbury. Serving with the 1st Battalion Shropshire Light Infantry, he entered the France / Flanders theatre of war on 10 September 1914. He was killed in action on 17 October 1916, aged 22 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. (Note: Commonwealth War Graves Commission gives the above date of death; ‘Soldiers Died’ give 12 October)
