Military Cross, G.V.R., reverse contemporarily engraved, ‘C.S.M. A. Baldock, Rifle Brigade’, very fine £280-320
M.C. London Gazette 14 November 1916. C.S.M., 8th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He assumed command of and led his company with great courage and detirmination, gaining his objective and consolidating the position. He set a splendid example.’
C.S.M. Baldock was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry in action at the battle of Hooge, 29/30 July 1915, when the Germans launched a ‘liquid fire’ attack on the British trenches. The 8th Battalion suffered 19 officers and 469 other rank casualties in the attack. For this action C.S.M. Baldock was awarded a ‘Gallantry and Meritorious Service’ card by the General Officer commanding. In the same action, 2nd Lieutenant S. C. Woodroffe, 8th Battalion Rifle Brigade, was awarded the Victoria Cross. Sold with some copied research details.
