George Hutchison entered the Army on 14 July 1814 and was appointed a Lieutenant in the 14th Light Dragoons on 29 September 1814. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 80th (Staffordshire Volunteers) Regiment by Purchase in 1852. Lieutenant-Colonel Hutchison commanded the 80th Regiment in the Burmese War from Sepember 1852 until its termination in 1853 and was present at the capture of Prome (awarded medal). He was promoted Colonel in 1854 and served in the Cape Colony in 1856. With the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny his regiment was sent to Ceylon and then India. Promoted to Brigadier in temporary command of a brigade, he died of wounds in 1859 during the latter stages of the campaign.
