A.L.S. by Viscount Goderich, President of the Board of Trade, to J.C. Herries. Addressed “My Dear Herries” and datelined “Downing Street Aug. 22 1822,” it assures Herries that should Goderich be asked to form a government, he would be appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. 18.5 x 23.3cm; together with two later A.L.S. by Goderich (then Prime Minister) to Herries (then Chancellor), one datelined “Gt. George Street Aug. 16 1829 9 1/2 p.m.” summoning him to visit because the King wanted to see him at Windsor the next day, the other datelined “Downing Street Aug. 23 1829” reads “The King desires me to communicate with you that he wishes you not to leave the neighbourhood of London, at present, without his permission,” both 11.3 x 18.1cm [3]. All with a few folds, clean (£130-160)

Frederick Robinson, Viscount Goderich (1782-1859), Prime Minister from August 1827 to January 1828. The first letter confirms Goderich’s intent to appoint Herries as his Chancellor of the Exchequer, an event which came to pass just over five years later
