Valletta, Jazz Varieties, card Threepence, legend above value, rev. proprietor’s name, 64 x 37mm (Lyall 1082, this specimen illustrated). Fine to very fine, of the highest rarity, believed the only example known (£50-100)

Jazz Varieties, a bar located at 144 Strait street where the proprietor was John Curmi & Co, is said to have been only for use by Royal Navy officers. Because of the severe shortage of small coinage suffered by Malta during World War II, consequent on the huge influx of service personnel, many bars and shops resorted to issuing card tokens, few of which have survived
