In September 1787 “The Directors of the Bank of England, and some other Officers, and also several Officers of the Mint, and the Company of Moniers…requested that they may be supplied with proofs of gold and silver coins from the new Guinea and Half-Guinea, and the Shilling and Sixpence dies.” The request was approved by the Master and on 19 September Chief Graver Lewis Pingo was authorized to prepare 168 four-coin sets for those who reimbursed him for the value of the metal and his workmanship. One hundred of these sets were struck for the directors of the Bank, eighteen for the other Bank Officers, thirty-eight for Mint officials (including four for Lewis Pingo and two under-engravers), and twelve for the Company of Moniers – information courtesy of H.E.
