D.C.M. London Gazette 1 January 1918; citation published 17 April 1918:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on many occasions during operations. He always exhibited the greatest courage and coolness in supervising the evacuation of the wounded, frequently under heavy shell fire, and his splendid example was an inspiration to his men.’

Thomas McNicol, a native of Derby, served during the Great War with the 33rd Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, 11th (Northern) Division, arriving with them in Egypt on 18 July 1915. The 33rd Field Ambulance landed at Suvla Bay on 6 August 1915 and was withdrawn from Gallipoli on 19 December 1915, moving to Imbros and then Egypt at the end of January 1916. In July 1916 the Division arrived on the front line in France in support of the Third Army on the Somme, the 33rd Field Ambulance in particular arriving at Arras on 18 July 1916 and remaining on the Western Front for the remainder of the war.
