Royal Canadian Mounted Police Long Service Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue (C. O. Baker) toned, good very fine £300-£360
R.C.M.P. Long Service Medal Canada Gazette 28 January 1939: ‘9164 Corporal C. O. Baker).’
Clarence Owen Baker was born at Halifax, N.S., on 26 July 1885, and joined the Dominion Police on 1 October 1918, in spite of the fact that he had lost his left arm, amputated after a shooting accident in about 1905. Questions about his ability to function as a police officer were raised when the Dominion Police were absorbed by the R.C.M.P. in February 1920. Evidently the answer was ‘No’ and when he retired in 1938, his discharge certificate described his conduct as ‘exemplary’. He died at Halifax on 17 May 1971.
Sold with research including a copied group photograph of “H” Division (Nova Scotia) taken in 1927.
