Ernest H. ‘Harry’ Stubbs was born at Gloucester, England, and enlisted into the 39th Battalion at Port Hope on 23 February 1915. He arrived in England on 3 July 1915, and proceeded overseas to France to join the 2nd Infantry Battalion on 27 October 1915, and is mentioned in the unit history for his action at Amiens in August 1918:

‘The platoon scout, Pte. E. H. Stubbs, was specially helpful there, locating the machine guns that were inflicting casualties on No. 4 Company. In the course of his search he encountered a position that was hitting back at the 16th Battalion, and doing considerable damage. Stubbs guided Cameron (Lt. D. A. Cameron) in an arc through the 4th Battalion front, swinging back when No. 16 Platoon were nicely in rear of the German position. The platoon stalked them skilfully, and rushed them almost before the Germans knew what was happening. A forest of hands shot in the air. An officer and 50 other ranks constituted the “bag” that fell to No. 16 Platoon. Stubbs’ part in the show was stout-hearted and heady.’

Stubbs joined the R.C.M.P. at Ottawa on 8 April 1921, and was invalided on pension on 4 November 1944. He served continuously in “A” Division at Ottawa, where he died on 7 February 1959.
