South Africa 1834-53 (Serjt. J. Atkinson. 27th Regt.) light contact marks, otherwise very fine £300-£400

John Atkinson was born at Clonena, Queen’s County, Ireland and enlisted in the 27th Foot at Carlow, Ireland on 9th May 1827 aged 18 years. He was promoted to Corporal in August 1831 and served with his regiment at the Cape of Good Hope for 12 Years and 230 days including the during the Kaffir War campaigns of 1834-35 and 1846-47. He was promoted to Sergeant on 14 January 1847 and was discharged on 12 May 1848 after 21 years’ service. Sergeant Atkinson was admitted on 6 June 1848 at Maryborough, Ireland as a permanent out-patient of Chelsea Hospital, suffering from chronic rheumatism caused by his duties as a soldier.
