George Newman was a native of Carrickfergus, Country Antrim. He served during the Great War on the Western Front with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers from 3 May 1915. Newman was awarded the M.M. and D.C.M. in 1918 for gallantry during a period when his battalion was part of the 109th Brigade of the 36th (Ulster) Division.
