Military Medal, G.V.R. (1784 Cpl. A. Warren. 21/Aust: Inf:) good very fine £500-£600

M.M. London Gazette 11 May 1917. The original recommendation states:

‘Recommended for Military Medal 25th March 1917 for being in charge of a platoon near Longatte 20th March 1917 and for carrying messages. He reorganised his men under heavy fire, superintended the construction of cover and carried messages across the open under heavy fire to the report centre, giving a most valuable example of soldierly conduct under fire.’

Arthur Warren was born in Bilston, Staffordshire. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, 8 February 1915, and served with the 21st Australian Infantry Battalion in Gallipoli from August 1915.

After being evacuated to Egypt, Warren served with the Battalion in the French theatre of war from March 1916. He was wounded in action, 5 August 1916 and 26 August 1916.

Warren advanced to Sergeant in April 1917, and was killed in action on the Western Front, 9 October 1917. Sergeant Warren has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
