A Great War 1917 ‘French theatre’ M.M. group of three awarded to Sergeant E. Schroter, 44th Australian Infantry Battalion, later Australian Army Ordnance Corps, Australian Imperial Force. He was wounded in action, 10 June 1917

Military Medal, G.V.R. (772 L. Cpl. E. Schroter. 44/Aust: Inf:) surname partially officially corrected; British War and Victory Medals (772 ER-Sjt E. Schroter. 44 Bn. A.I.F.) with shooting prize medal, engraved ‘F.R.C.’ on obverse and ‘E. Schroter from your old Club 1916’ on the reverse, generally very fine or better (3) £600-£800

Ernest Schroter was born in Litherland, near Liverpool, Lancashire in 1891. He was the son of German parents, and served with the 10th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment for over 4 years prior to the Great War. Schroter subsequently moved to Australis, and resided in Fremantle where he was a member of the Fremantle Rifle Club.

Schroter enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Perth, Western Australia, 11 January 1916. He served with the 44th Australian Infantry Battalion in the French theatre of war from November 1916, and received a shrapnel wound to his right knee, 10 June 1917.

Schroter advanced to Corporal and transferred to the Australian Army Ordnance Corps in July 1918. Having advanced to Acting Sergeant, he returned to Australia in February 1920. Schroter was discharged, 9 May 1920, and died at Nether Stowey, Somerset in March 1969.
